CANAWAY FLEMING ARCHITECTS
The eastern Czech city of Zlin is the location for a new art Museum and Art Gallery in a redundant shoe factory once the home of the famous Bata shoe makers. The buildings are impressive concrete and masonry industrial structures that sit in the old industrial heart of the city.
The new museum and gallery are part of a wider plan to regenerate the now redundant industrial areas of the city to provide cultural and employment uses in addition to new housing and a transport interchange. The scheme proposes to place the gallery and museum alongside a new public square opposite a bus and rail station that connects to a new linear park linking existing housing zones and communities.
The existing factory buildings will be reused and extended to create a new entrance hall and ticket areas, restaurants, back of house and specialised art delivery and storage facilities. The existing structure and form of the buildings would be retained displaying the industrial heritage of the new city quarter.
Canaway Fleming designed the building and masterplan for an international design competition, receiving an honourable mention.
